About Jen Schmidt
For nearly 30 years, Jen Schmidt has been making art. Whether crayon on construction paper, oil on canvas or photos on newsprint, she has never shied away from the opportunity to create. In 2007 Jen earned her B.A. in art from the University of Puget Sound, and in the years that followed she continued to hone her skills in the craft of photojournalism, working for Reno/Tahoe area newspapers and magazines. With a style as creative as it is perceptive, Jen captures details, emotions and moments with the eye of a journalist and the soul of an artist.
Jen has earned numerous Nevada Press Association awards, including first place awards for Best Feature Photo, Best General News Photo, Best Illustrated Photo and Best Entertainment Writing. A 20-year Tahoe local, she enjoys giving back to the community that raised her. Jen participates annually in Star Follies, serves as a merit badge counselor for Boy Scout Troop 37 and is on the board of the Butterfly Effect 5k Run/Walk for thyroid cancer. She is a contributing editor for Tahoe Quarterly magazine and also regularly does work for local non-profits in need.
During the winter Jen is a blur of snow and ski; during the summer you can find her dangling her toes off a sailboat, playing with her dog (and camera – of course!) on the beach or backpacking Desolation Wilderness with friends and family. Always on the go, Jen enjoys traveling and has photographed weddings in destination locations from the mountains of Santa Cruz to the harbors of Martha’s Vineyard, Seattle, Santa Barbara, Montana and even Mexico.
